Asus Eee PC X101CH

A representative of a now-extinct category of devices - netbooks.
In other words, the cheap laptops that used to be sold for browsing the internet, which, years later, are no longer capable of doing so.

In 2007, Asus launched its first netbook - the Eee PC 701 - which kicked off a trend lasting several years for small and very cheap laptops designed for browsing the internet. The idea was simple - back then, web pages were very lightweight, so very basic, energy-efficient components could be used for such tasks. Admittedly, Asus's first netbook didn't run Windows, but all subsequent models did.

The X101CH model shown here dates from the very decline of the netbook market, just before netbooks became obsolete and were replaced by Google's Chromebooks. Like almost any stereotypical netbook, it features an Intel Atom processor, a modest amount of RAM, a very cheap case, a 10-inch display and Windows 7 Starter, which has strange and artificial limitations, such as the inability to change the wallpaper.

This particular processor (the Atom N2600) has an unusual integrated graphics chip which, although it bears the same name as other Intel graphics chips, is in fact part of the PowerVR series. This is a significant limitation, as there are no drivers for it on any operating system other than the 32-bit version of Windows 7. Seriously. Don't even think about any hardware graphics support in Windows XP or any GNU/Linux distribution. As if that wasn't enough, Asus decided to omit any cooling, so the processor sits there bare and exposed, whilst on the other side of the motherboard there's a piece of thermal pad meant to come into contact with the keyboard.

Interestingly, despite its rather modest specifications, it came with a 320 GB hard drive pre-installed.
